Déols is the mother city of Châteauroux and in the past was called Bourg-Dieu (God's Town).
Its many monuments bear witness to its rich historical past.
Déols' Benedictine Abbey of Notre-Dam e:
The year 2007 marked the 900th anniversary of the construction of Déols III in 1107, which was, like Cluny Abbey, built three times.
The last of the seven bell towers of the abbey church can be visited on Heritage Days and on request; the climb is difficult but the view is beautiful.
Saint-Etienne Church :
The 12th century Romanesque nave has a wooden arched ceiling. The aisles date from the 14th century; the bell tower dates from the 16th century and contains three bells, one of which dating from 1576 commemorates an episode in the abbey's history. The bell tower can be visited by prior request.
A crypt holds the tomb of Saint Léocade, another one holds the 3rd century finely sculpted marble tomb of Saint Ludre, who was a healer. A wooden altar dedicated to Saint Ludre dating from the 17th century represents the saint at 34 years old.
The altar of the Blessed Virgin contains the statue of the miracle of 1187, which was restored in the 19th century.
