George Sand once said, "It is towards La Châtre where style and colour is to be found in the Berry region". She called this region "The Black Valley": "...All the hills are wooded, which gives them this beautiful blue colour when seen from far away, and which turns to purple and almost black on stormy days...".
The Black Valley, located 20 km south of Châteauroux, owes its fame to George Sand, and is a fascinating place full of legends and traditions. All the places associated with this author, such as La Mare au Diable, Le Moulin d'Angibault, Nohant, La Châtre and many more besides, the heritage and walking trails immerse us in the novels of "la Bonne Dame de Nohant".
In summer, les "Fêtes Romantiques de Nohant" (Nohant Romantic Festival), the luthiers and maîtres sonneurs festival (music festival) and les "Rencontres Chopin" (International Frédéric Chopin Festival), attract a large international audience.
