Cultural Châteauroux

Middle Ages to the 19th century …

The history of Châteauroux began in the 10th century when a château was built on the banks of the Indre: Château-Raoul (the Déols lords’ château) which was contracted to form the name of the town.

Châteauroux became Prefecture during the French Revolution and industry grew here from the 19th century. You can still see period buildings such as the Manufacture de Draps Balsan, Manufacture des Tabacs and the churches that were built to accommodate the growing working population…
Many of these sites are now illuminated at nightfall…
Châteauroux is also a stage on the Santiago de Compostela route on the Vézelay road. Shells on the ground mark the way through the town that’s been there since the Middle Ages.
