Abbaye Notre-Dame - Déols

Back

Déols is the “mother city” of Châteauroux.

Previously called Bourg-Dieu, many relics bear witness to its exciting past.

The Benedictine abbey in Déols was founded in 917 by Ebbes le Noble and among the biggest Roman churches in France. The Hundred Years’ War then the Wars of Religion caused the destruction of the abbey. Only one (42m high) of the Benedictine abbey’s (113m long) seven bell towers still stands. You can go up to the top of the bell tower for fabulous views of the town. A 3D terminal at the Tourist Information Kiosk depicts the abbey as it was in its heyday.
