Pays de La Châtre en Berry

“Berry gains style and colour around La Châtre,” said George Sand who nicknamed the region “the Black Valley”: “…The uplands are all covered in trees which give our faraway hills that beautiful blue colour which goes purple and almost black on stormy days…”

The Black Valley is bursting with fascinating stories and traditions. It lies 20km south of Châteauroux and owes its fame to George Sand. You’ll be whisked away to George Sand’s tales with sites mentioned in the author’s novels such as the Mare au Diable (the Devil’s pool), Moulin d'Angibault, Nohant and La Châtre alongside the heritage and many footpaths.

The Chopin de Nohant Festival and "Le son continu" Festival at Château d'Ars attract an ever growing number of international visitors every summer.
